912/Tea Party...Washington, DC 3/20/10
What a day it was! I met many like-minded people today in my trip to Washington. Good people who joined me in opposition to the government takeover of our personal health care. Look for the pictures on my Facebook. Find a link at DanBradley2010.com.
I had the pleasure of participating in the 9/12/09 Tea Party in Washington. While today's event, planned only days ago, had an understandably much smaller crowd, it put into perspective the number of people who were at the 9/12 event.
I remember wondering on 9/12 if the hordes of people I saw on the Mall just happened to be visitors that day or if they were part of our Tea Party. Without a doubt, the great, great majority of them were Tea Party people. Our crowd today, estimated in the tens of thousands, did not approach the attendance from 9/12. The Mall overflowed with people on 9/12. Today, we were contained on the lawn of the capitol building with small numbers of visitors on the Mall.
Regardless the numbers, the crowd was electrified and tired of government as usual. We need to be heard. We need a citizen legislature. That is the only way we will have our representatives listening to us. It is time for term limits at every level of government.
When our representatives do what they want with no concern for the citizens, something is drastically wrong. They know they have the power and we are powerless to stop them. They really don't even care about who holds what seat. It is the Parties that have the power, not the people, or even our elected representatives. Without term limits, we can't stop them. Without election reforms, we can't stop them.
The system has been designed by the parties to maintain control. We need to elect good, average citizens to fight the system. We need to elect people who are not indebted to the parties. We need good representatives who are indebted only to the citizens. It is time to take our government back. It is time for a true citizen legislature.
That is why I am running to represent the people of the 196th. This is not a career for me. It is time to take our government back and return it to the people. I have a career in life, not in politics. I plan to make it easier for the average citizen. Right now, you have to be part of the party machine to get elected. No more...we will take our government back starting on May 18th!

Left-Wing Media: Terrorists to the Conservative
Appeasement! That's the key to ending terrorism against us. We just need to talk with the terrorists. Show them that we are no different than they are. We want what they want. Maybe we could throw in an apology here and there. You know, show them that we recognize we have been, on occasion, the bad guy. We deserved what we got, but we have the same "hope" for "change" that everyone else does. We are asking for forgiveness. Give us a second chance and we can show you that we really are no different than everyone else is.
If there is one conservative reading this who actually believes it, then you should join Arlen Specter in the Democrat Party. A true conservative knows that appeasement NEVER works. It never has and it never will. Why then, does the leadership of the Republican Party play this same game with the mainstream media? That's right. Our leaders try to appease the liberals of America. The result has been a disaster for the Republican Party. We are at our best when we proudly express and defend our views as conservatives. We lose our reputation when we try to appease the liberals.
No, the members of the liberal media are not blowing themselves up in an attempt to end conservatism. There aren't any virgins waiting for them (in fact, being a virgin is a sin to a liberal). However, the liberal media is doing its best to end the conservative way of life on which America was founded. But, even that is not the point of this article. The real problem is the way in which the so-called leadership of the Republican Party responds to this attack from the left wing.
It's a fact of life that people have opinions. It's a fact of American life that most of the opinions of the people in the mainstream media are liberal opinions. That won't change overnight. All we can do is be who we are. Let them trip over each other trying to make fun of our beliefs. The truth is that most Americans believe what we believe. What they have a problem with is when we don't act like who we claim to be. We are at our best when we stick to our principles in all we do. When the public knows they can trust that we will do what we say, the public will follow.
The Republican Party quite rightly opposes appeasement. History has shown that it never works. The enemy takes advantage of the weakness shown by the appeaser. The bully always takes advantage of that weakness. It is time we stop appeasing those who disagree with us. It is time we stand up for what we believe. It wasn't that long ago that we did that. And it wasn't that long ago that we were in control and the liberals looked like a dying breed.

Republican or Conservative
Republican or conservative, what's the difference? Plenty...but there shouldn't be.
The Republican Party has historically been the Party of conservative ideals. Small government, lower taxes, capitalism, constitutional rights, the American way have always been at the core of the Republican Party. This is also what it means to be a conservative. So why does there seem to be this chasm between the two?
For one, the misplaced idea of a 'big tent' mentality harms the Party. Sure, the Party can be open to anyone who wants to be a part of it. Be they liberal on social issues, liberal on economic issues, or liberal on constitutional issues, it doesn't matter. The door is open to them all. However, these members need to check their views at the door. The Republican Party should not back down on her core principles just to give some perception of a 'big tent.' It is this mentality that is killing the Party.
When someone with views that contradict the principles of the Republican Party shows an interest in membership in our Party, he must be willing to accept a few prerequisites prior to involvement in the Party. First, as mentioned above, he must check his views at the door. Second, as a member of the Party, he must give his all in helping further the message of the Party as outlined in our principles. Third, if he has a desire to hold public office, don't expect to have the support of the Party. If you are not willing to embrace our principles then the Party cannot support you.
Recent history has shown how bad it can be for the Republican Party to support a candidate who does not share our views. For nearly 30 years we endorsed and supported a Senator who fit that mold. On issues important to the conservative party, he was rarely in sinc with our principles. Those who hold strong conservative views could not, nor would not support him. But, the powers that be in the Republican Party put power before principles. I ask, what good does it do to have someone with an 'R' next to his name if his votes indicate a 'D?'
We had the opportunity to endorse someone who espouses the ideals of the Republican Party. We turned down the opportunity. Why? Simply because we feared that a true conservative could not win the general election. What did we get for that rationale? We got a second conservative senator thrown out of office because his conservative base turned on him when he supported the power over principle mentality. We also got a liberal senator who finally acknowledged what conservatives knew for 30 years...he is not one of us.
When will we learn that we need to stand up for our principles? It is when we proudly tout our beliefs that we win. We cannot continue to try to please everyone with this notion of a 'big tent.' We didn't do it when Reagan was president and we all know how that worked out. We didn't do it when Newt gave us the Contract with America and we all know how that worked out.
We can't continue to be afraid of our principles. Our leadership must proudly espouse our views. If Party leadership shows a lack of conviction for our views then how will we ever convince others to follow? It is time to let our leadership know that the proud membership wants a leadership that shows its pride in our Party. We need to show a willingness to put principle over power. Once we do that, the power will be ours.

NEXT WEEK: Who Would Reagan Be?
In this time of difficulty for our nation, we are apt to ask the question, what would Jesus do? It is always appropriate to consider the answer to that question when addressing the needs of society and the individual. However, in this time of difficulty for the Republican Party, a time that we strive to find our identity, it is also just as appropriate to ask the question, who would Reagan be? If Reagan were with us today, what Republican leader or leaders would he most identify with?
Arlen Specter? Tom Ridge? John McCain?
No, obviously, Reagan, if he where with us today, would not be any of these Republicans. In fact, Ron wouldn't recognize any of them as Republicans. Why, then, do we continue to look to these individuals as the leaders of our party? We have Jeb and Mitt "listening" to the public. We've had nearly 30 long years of Pennsylvania leadership telling us what a great Republican we had in Arlen Specter. The darling of the liberal media for the Republican party was John McCain, and we sheepishly followed the call and pulled the lever for, at best, a middle-of-the-road Republican as our candidate for president.
These individuals have led us down the road to oblivion. They have strayed form the Reagan philosophy and look where they have brought us. Jeb is even telling us we need to forget about Reagan. It's time to move on and redefine our party, he tells us. WHAT? We don't need to redefine our party. We need to get back to our conservative principles that put us in power under Ronald Reagan. It was his strong committment to and conviction of our conservative principles that led to eight years of incredible growth both economically and in patriotism. We were proud of who we were. Where is that pride now? The democrats certainly won't show it or lead us to it. It will take a true Reagan republican to provide that inspiration. It will take a present-day Reagan to fix what ails our country. Which, brings me back tot he point of this article. What present-day leaders of the Republican Party are most like Ronald Reagan?
The answer to this question is not needed in this article. While I have a few of my personal favorites, it is up to all of us to recognize the convictions and values of our leaders and decide for ourselves. The key being convictions. Automatically, we should eliminate any wishy-washy politicians from contention. Reagan was no wishy-washy politician. We knew where he stood. That is the type of politician who can win elections for us.
I, for one, refuse to put Reagan behind me. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. We need to remember the history of Reagan so we can repeat it!

McCain All Over Again
Tom Ridge? Tom Ridge? You've got to be kidding me! We just lost an election in Pennsylvania with a candidate who could easily be mistaken for Tom Ridge. John McCain has proven that moderate Republicans can't win elections. Why would the Republican Party want to run Tom Ridge for U.S. Senate from Pennsylvania?
It is time to go back to the roots of our Party: the same principles that created two landslide victories for Ronald Reagan and the Republican Party. Until we as a Party recognize that our principles are the principles that made this country great, we will not put ourselves in a position to lead.
Being politically correct is not leadership. That is what our Party has come to. We are afraid to stand up for what we believe. We need to stop apologizing for wanting a strong defense (even if it means torturing people who would do us harm). We need to stop apologizing for believing that lower taxes are what spurs our economy. We enjoyed 25 years of incredible economic growth as a result of Reagan's tax policies. Not until our government forced the banking industry to make bad home loans did our economy falter. We need to stop apolgizing for defending the right to life of unborn children. It is no less of a noble cause than the cause of the abolitionists.
It is these principles of our Party that win elections. It is these principles of our Party that individuals like John McCain and Tom Ridge are afraid to stand up for. We need new leadership. We need individuals like Newt Gingerich to lead our Party back.
In Pennsylvanis, we need people like Pat Toomey and Peg Luksik who aren't afraid to stand up for the Second Ammendment, or the right to life of the unborn, or for the greatness of our nation.
We have an opportunity in Pennsylvania, now that Arlen is gone, to begin the comeback. The last time we had a candidate run for U.S. Senate with a Democrat in the White House was the conservative Rick Santorum. Santorum was part of the Clinton backlash. The table is being set again with the socialist policies of our current administration. We cannot waste it on a wishy-washy McCainiac. We need to go back to our principles and stand proudly by them. That is how we win our seat back!
